There is some seriously exciting news brewing for one of Southsea’s most characterful streets! After five years of planning, designing, and plenty of local collaboration, the pedestrianisation of Castle Road has finally been approved and work officially begins Monday 20th October 2025.

This long-awaited project has been a true community effort, first championed by the Castle Road South Neighbours and Traders Association, and later driven forward by the Castle Road Community Association (CRCA). The final design led by local artist and CRCA Director Pete Codling stands for years of dialogue, feedback, and vision from residents and businesses alike.

What’s Happening

Work will start at the Hambrook Street junction, moving gradually south along Castle Road. While no night work is planned (thankfully for the neighbours!), there may be some early Saturday activity to help set up traffic management or speed up the schedule.

During the works, a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) will be in place, with understandable signs to guide drivers and cyclists through detours and changes. A temporary loading bay will also appear on Kent Road, meaning some parking spaces will be suspended for the duration.

The CRCA and Portsmouth City Council, alongside Colas, will have contact numbers available throughout the project so if there are any hiccups, help will be just a call away. CRCA Directors will also be attending weekly site meetings to stay on top of progress and community concerns.

Greener, Cleaner, Better

The plan includes new cycle storage and sustainable waste management, aligning with CRCA and PCC’s shared commitment to greener, low-carbon living. One proposed bin will sit just outside Castle Convenience Store, keeping things tidy and practical for visitors.

What’s Next

Once the works are wrapped up, Castle Road is set to become a thriving, pedestrian-friendly space perfect for local markets, community events, and street gatherings. The CRCA is already planning ways to celebrate the transformation, turning this historic street into a lively social hub once more.

Castle Road’s future is looking bright and beautifully walkable.
