Residents are being encouraged to put online shopping to one side and rediscover the pleasure of browsing in person. Wrap up warm, wander through festive window displays, enjoy a hearty lunch, and choose thoughtful gifts from the independents that give our city its character. Every purchase helps sustain Portsmouth’s creative and commercial community.

Festive markets will fill Commercial Road and Palmerston Road, offering everything from handmade crafts to seasonal produce. And if you’re feeling adventurous, the ice rink in Guildhall Square promises skating under twinkling lights – a charming winter experience come rain or shine.

Christmas Lights Switch-On Celebrations

Portsmouth’s countdown to Christmas begins with three lively evenings of entertainment, music and magical illuminations. Each event will be hosted by local broadcasting favourite Mark Collins from Nation Radio, and features a special appearance from Father Christmas himself.

Southsea – Palmerston Road

Thursday 20 November, 5 pm–7 pm

A night of festive music, live performances and dazzling lights, joined by stars from the Kings Theatre’s pantomime Aladdin. Expect appearances from Shaun Williamson (known to many as Barry from EastEnders), the ever-charismatic Rustie Lee, and Portsmouth FC manager John Mousinho.

Cosham – High Street Carols

Friday 21 November, 5 pm–6.30 pm

Cosham offers classic Christmas warmth with carols around the tree, accompanied by the Resonate Choir, Collingwood Brass Band and the Charlalas.

City Centre – Commercial Road

Saturday 22 November, 4.30 pm–6 pm

Live music, local performers and a festive spectacle, joined by cast members from the Theatre Royal’s Snow White and another appearance from Shaun Williamson of Kings Theatre fame.

Saturday 22 November – Tuesday 30 December

Commercial Road transforms into a festive marketplace with traditional stalls, warming food, and seasonal gift ideas. Enjoy bratwurst and glühwein, browse handmade decorations, and soak up the Christmas atmosphere. From Thursday to Saturday each week, even more stalls will join the celebrations, bringing fresh produce, unique gifts and festive treats.

Special highlights include:

Saturday 13 December – Two mischievous elves arrive with their “Goodometer”, a comedic contraption designed to determine who’s been naughty or nice.

Saturday 20 December – Live art on the street, featuring balloon artist Luto and local artist Adam Adamart drawing caricatures of famous faces — and perhaps yours.
