Portsmouth rolled out the red carpet (or perhaps a red buoy?) this weekend as the glamorous Scarlet Lady cruise ship made her long-awaited return to our historic port.

After four years away, the 110,000-tonne party palace—famous for its luxurious design, adult-only vibes, and next-level amenities—sailed back into Portsmouth International Port on Sunday, July 27. A small but enthusiastic crowd gathered at The Round Tower in Old Portsmouth to catch a glimpse of her arrival, proving that this ship still has star power.

This isn’t just any cruise ship; Scarlet Lady is the original flagship of Virgin Voyages, and her return is something of a homecoming. Back in 2020, Portsmouth was the launchpad for Virgin’s bold entry into the cruise world—and we haven’t looked back since.

🌍 A Port with Purpose

Portsmouth International Port has played a key role in supporting Virgin Voyages’ journey from day one. Since the inaugural visit, over 72,000 passengers have embarked on Virgin cruises from our city’s shores. Not bad for a port that’s better known for its ferries and naval heritage!

Councillor Steve Pitt, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said:

“It’s always exciting to see cruise lines return to Portsmouth. This call from Scarlet Lady marks four years since the Virgin Voyages brand first launched from the city. Our council-owned port has since become the UK home for their ships.”

That spotlight is only set to grow brighter. Virgin Voyages’ newest ship, Brilliant Lady, is due to arrive next month—bringing even more buzz, visitors, and economic benefits to the city.

What’s Next?

With Scarlet Lady docked once more and Brilliant Lady on the horizon, Portsmouth’s cruise scene is clearly sailing full steam ahead. It’s another sign of how the city continues to evolve—welcoming the future while honouring its rich maritime roots.

Whether you’re ship-spotting from the seafront, dreaming of your next voyage, or just loving the boost to the local economy, there’s no doubt: Portsmouth is a port of call to be proud of.
